BUILD THE RIGHT THING
AI is leverage, not autopilot Entrepreneurs do many jobs. AI can help with first drafts, research plans, summaries, patterns, and repeat work. Think of it as a fast junior assistant: useful, creative, and sometimes confidently wrong. You still set the goal, check the work, and make the call.

U.S. Census research found 18% of firms used AI in a business function during late 2025 to early 2026.
Most adopting firms used AI in three or fewer functions.
An OECD survey found performance gains were reported more often than revenue gains.
Do not buy the hype. Establish a baseline and compare the result. [1-2]
KEEP THIS IN MIND Start with a problem you already understand. Never hand over a decision because the output looks polished.

CUSTOMER DISCOVERY
Find the pain before the tool A tool is not a business idea. A painful problem is a better place to start. Talk to at least five possible buyers and ask about what they actually did, not what they might do. [3]
Ask these six questions Tell me about the last time this problem happened. What did you do to fix it?
PROMPT TO TRY Group these anonymized interview notes. Show the top three repeated problems, evidence for each, questions I still need to ask, and any facts that conflict. Do not invent demand or quotes.
How much time or money did it cost? What was the hardest part? Who decides whether to buy a solution? What would a good result look like?
THE POWER MOVE Let AI organize messy notes. Only real customers can confirm demand.

EXPERIMENT FIRST
Run the smallest useful test Do not add AI to the whole company. Pick one task and test it for one week. The SBA also recommends starting small and checking whether a tool adds value. [4] 1

Record the normal time, error rate, and quality. Then run at least ten realistic examples through the new process. A person reviews every result. At the end, choose KEEP, CHANGE, or STOP. Stopping a weak idea is a win because it saves money.
Measure the test Accuracy Usefulness Brand fit
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE Provider-reported example: OpenAI says The Original Tamale Co. used ChatGPT to build a searchable farmers-market tracker in one afternoon. The useful idea was not 'use AI.' It was 'help customers find us.' [11]

BUILD THE OFFER
Sell a result people understand Customers do not buy AI. They buy a faster result, fewer mistakes, more leads, or less stress.
OFFER FORMULA We help [specific customer] get [clear result] without [costly frustration] through [simple process].
VAGUE
CLEAR
Weak: I offer AI marketing services.
Clear: I help independent gyms turn one weekly tip into 12 approved posts, two emails, and a 30-day content plan - delivered every Monday.
AI can suggest names, packages, and price options. It cannot know what your market will pay. Compare alternatives, ask buyers, list delivery costs, and know your break-even point. [3]
Offer checklist
Keep checking
One clear buyer
Clear scope and deadline
One painful job
Price and payment terms
One useful outcome
What is not included

REMEMBER Money left per sale starts with price minus direct delivery cost. Include tool fees and your time. Ask an accountant about full costs and taxes.

MARKETING
Market like a human Start with one useful idea: a customer question, short lesson, demo, or true story. Ask AI to adapt it. Then add your voice, facts, and point of view.
One idea can become One short article Three social posts One email
PROMPT TO TRY Turn this approved idea into five assets for [audience]. Use plain language and our tone: [three traits]. Keep every fact from the source. Mark claims that need proof. End each asset with one next step.
One 45-second video outline One FAQ answer
THE POWER MOVE Create options, test one variable at a time, and let a person approve every public claim.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE OpenAI reports that Sharp & Sharp Certified Seed made decades of handwritten crop records searchable - a practical use of knowledge the business already had. [11]
MONEY + RECORDS RULE AI is not your books. The IRS says electronic records must remain complete, accurate, and accessible. A qualified person approves tax, payroll, and payment decisions. [5]

PEOPLE + TRUST
Grow the team without losing trust Use AI to support people, not quietly judge them. A person makes hiring, pay, promotion, discipline, and firing decisions. U.S. guidance warns that hiring tools can create disability and accessibility barriers. [9-10]
GREEN LOW RISK
YELLOW REVIEW
RED STOP
Brainstorming, public research plans, formatting, and first drafts with non-sensitive data.
Customer messages, pricing, contracts, finance, employee material, public claims, and recommendations.
Passwords, bank details, Social Security numbers, health data, private client files, or trade secrets in an unapproved tool.

Use an approved account
Check facts and math

HIGH-IMPACT RULE If an output affects money, rights, health, safety, jobs, or reputation, a qualified person reviews it. NIST and FTC guidance support testing, source checks, policies, monitoring, and honest data controls. [6][8]
